Dear President:

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board, in its last meeting, has examined the recommendations of the IOC Programme Commission, including the submissions of a total of eighteen (18) sports that were candidating to be part of the 2008 Olympic Games programme.

The Executive Board decided not to admit fourteen (14) of these sports in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Therefore, only four (4) sports – Golf, Karate, Rugby and Wushu – which is less than 25% of the total number of applications candidating, remain in the shortlist. Golf and Rugby as recommendations for inclusion (under certain conditions) and Karate and Wushu for further review. At the same time the IOC Programme Commission recommends the exclusion of three (3) sports from the 2008 Olympic Programme, namely Baseball, Modern Pentathlon and Softball.

Although we have to congratulate ourselves for what without any doubt is a huge and historic step forward for karate in its Olympic goal, you must know that it is not going to be easy for our sport to be present in Beijing 2008.

In any case now IOC is fully aware that karate deserves a place as Olympic sport and this should therefore make easier our way to the Olympics.

As actions to be performed, I request you to as soon as possible have a personal meeting with your NOC president and in its case with your IOC member(s). Also to carefully read and be sure to be familiar before that meetings with the following documents:

  1. - IOC press release (enclosed)
  2. - Programme Commission report (find it in the IOC web page in:   www.olympic.org/uk/news/publications/press_uk.asp?release=308 )
  3. - Karate Olympic Participation Proposal (you have it already)
  4. - WKF President letter to IOC President (enclosed)

We face a decisive period in the history of our sport. By the end of next November the IOC Session will probably decide in Mexico on our future. We are touching the Olympic Games with the tips of our fingers, but only the efficient action of the majority of WKF-NF’s, added to the WKF leadership action, can make this goal to become a reality.

Please do not hesitate to ask for any question or any feedback, document, etc. you might need for a better performance of the above tasks outstanding.
